How to Create a Google Account Without Your Phone Number

Google doesn’t always ask for a phone number when you create an account, but it asks often, and unpredictably: new Gmail addresses, sign-ups from a device that already has accounts, sign-ins it finds unusual. When the “Verify your phone number” screen appears, there’s no skip button. A rented virtual number passes that check without adding your personal number to yet another Google profile.

Common legitimate reasons people do this: a separate account per project or client, developer test accounts, one account per Android test device, or plain privacy preference.

Step by step

  1. Start the Google sign-up at accounts.google.com (or from an Android device). Fill in name, Gmail address, password.
  2. When Google asks for a phone number, go to MarioSMS, pick Google as the service, choose a country in stock, and rent a number.
  3. Enter the rented number in Google’s verification screen. Google sends a G-code by SMS.
  4. Read the code in your MarioSMS dashboard (it typically lands within a minute) and type it into Google. Verification done.
  5. Skip the “recovery phone” step. Google will offer to save the number as a recovery method; decline it. You want a recovery email, not a rented number, attached for recovery.

The important part: recovery setup

The verification number is one-time; your account’s long-term security should not depend on it.

  • Add a recovery email immediately (Google Account → Security → Recovery email).
  • Prefer TOTP two-factor (Google Authenticator or any TOTP app) over SMS 2FA, so no phone number is involved in day-to-day security at all.
  • Write down the backup codes Google offers when you enable 2FA.

Set up this way, the account is actually more robust than one tied to a personal number that might change or be SIM-swapped.

Notes

  • Country selection is flexible. Google accepts numbers from most countries regardless of where you are. If one country’s stock is thin for Google, try another; see available countries.
  • One number per account. Google tracks how many accounts a number has verified; each MarioSMS activation gives you a fresh number, so this isn’t your problem.
  • Play fair. Separate accounts for projects, testing, and privacy are fine. Mass account creation, fake engagement, or fraud are prohibited (see the acceptable use policy) and will also trip Google’s own abuse systems regardless of what number you use.
