Creating a Google account from a new device or a new network usually ends at a screen asking for a phone number, described as verifying you are not a robot. The code is six digits, prefixed G-, and the account does not exist until it is entered. Google limits how many accounts one number can verify, which is why a second Gmail for a project, a business, or a clean separation from a personal identity usually means a second number.

The number used at signup is not automatically the recovery number. Google asks about recovery separately, and that is the one to set to something you control for years. Give the signup check a rented number, give recovery an email you own, and the account is never tied to a line you no longer hold.

The signup check and the recovery number are different things

At signup, Google wants proof that a phone exists on the other end. It sends a G-code, you type it, and that is the last time that number is required for the signup itself. Google then offers to add a recovery phone and a recovery email. Skip the phone, add the email, and later add an authenticator app under Security for two-step verification.

Because the two are separate, a rented number is safe to use here. The rented number satisfies the one-time check and goes back to the pool. Recovery lives on an email and an authenticator, both of which you keep. An account set up this way never needs the signup number again.

Numbers Google turns away

Google refuses Google Voice numbers for verification, which surprises people, and it refuses most VoIP ranges and the shared numbers on free SMS sites. The message is usually that the number cannot be used for verification. It also tracks how many accounts a number has verified and stops accepting it after a few, which is why a number that worked for a friend may fail for you.

The numbers here are from real mobile carrier allocations, single-use for your window, and that is the combination Google's check is looking for. If Google's own signup is showing no phone step at all, that is fine too; it does not ask every time.

A second Google account, done the way Google allows

Google has no rule against multiple accounts, and its own apps switch between them. A separate account for a business, a project, a YouTube channel or sign-ups you would rather keep away from your main identity is ordinary. Google draws the line at bulk creation and at accounts used to evade a suspension, and it links accounts by device and behaviour, not only by number.

On Android, signing in to a Google account on a phone makes it that phone's account for Play and backups. If the second account is for a service you use in a browser, keep it in the browser, and the phone stays tied to your own.
