Spanish phone numbers have nine digits and no trunk 0, so the same digits work at home and after +34. Mobiles start with 6 or 7, landlines with 9. Spanish apps check the first digit, and a number starting 9 will not receive a code. A rented Spanish mobile passes that check without a Spanish SIM, which carriers sell only after seeing an ID or passport.
Mobile ranges in Spain belong mainly to Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, which merged with MásMóvil into MasOrange in 2024, and Digi. A service that looks up a rented number sees a Spanish mobile on one of those and sends the code.
Nine digits and nothing to drop
A Spanish mobile reads 612 345 678 inside the country and +34 612 345 678 from anywhere else. Unlike the UK or Germany, there is no leading 0 to remove, so the digits never change. Forms with a +34 picker want the nine digits. If a form rejects them, check whether it has added +34 twice.
Numbers starting 9 or 8 are fixed lines tied to a province, 91 for Madrid and 93 for Barcelona. They take calls, not verification texts.
Spanish apps that ask for a local number
Secondhand selling is a big reason. Wallapop and Vinted both confirm accounts by phone, and a seller who lives elsewhere in Europe but ships from Spain wants a Spanish number on the listing account. Ride-hailing through Uber, concert tickets through Ticketmaster Spain, and dating apps such as Bumble are the other common cases.
Portugal shares the peninsula but uses +351, and Andorra has its own +376. Services local to either will not accept a Spanish number, so pick the country the service belongs to.
Keeping the account after the window
The rented number returns to the pool once the activation window ends. Before then, set the account's recovery to an email you own and turn on app-based two-factor if it is offered. After that the account does not depend on the number.
Spanish banks and payment apps verify identity with a DNI or NIE, and a phone number does not replace that. For marketplaces, delivery and social apps, a rented Spanish mobile works like any other.
Is there a 0 to remove after +34?
No. Spanish numbers have no trunk 0. The nine digits are the same at home and after +34.
Which prefixes are Spanish mobiles?
Numbers starting 6 or 7. Numbers starting 8 or 9 are fixed lines and cannot receive verification texts.
Will a Spanish number work for a Portuguese service?
Usually not. Portuguese services check for +351. Pick a Portuguese number for those.
What if the code never lands?
The activation cancels at the end of the window and the full price returns to your balance.
