WhatsApp is built on the phone number. It is the account's identity, the thing other people see, and the only way to register. One number holds exactly one account, so a second WhatsApp for work, for a business profile, or for a market you sell into, such as a Brazilian or Indian number for local customers, needs a second number. A rented one is that second number for the six-digit code at setup, and the account keeps working on your device afterwards.

The reason this works is that WhatsApp verifies the number once and then trusts the device. Sessions live on the phone, encrypted, and the number is not contacted again until you log out or move to a new handset. Set the six-digit two-step verification PIN in Settings and the account is protected against anyone who later holds that number.

How the verification actually runs

You enter the number, WhatsApp sends a six-digit SMS, and you type it in. If the SMS does not arrive, the app offers a voice call after a short wait, and the code is read out. Either route completes registration. WhatsApp Business is a separate app, so the same phone can hold a personal WhatsApp on your own number and a business one on a rented number at the same time.

Once registered, the number becomes what contacts see and how they find you. WhatsApp's privacy settings decide who can see your profile photo, your about text and your last-seen time, but the number itself is visible to anyone you message. That is the reason to keep a work or selling account on a number that is not the one your family uses.

Numbers WhatsApp refuses, and why these pass

WhatsApp checks the range the number belongs to. Landlines are accepted by voice call only. VoIP ranges and the shared numbers on free SMS sites are usually refused, or the code never lands, because those ranges have been used to register accounts at scale before. The numbers rented here are from real mobile carrier allocations, which is what WhatsApp is checking for.

A rented number has usually had a previous holder, and on WhatsApp that can show up at registration. If a prior holder registered WhatsApp on it and never logged out, you may see their old profile for a moment before your registration replaces it. Your registration ends their session, and nothing of yours is visible to them.

Keeping the account after the number is gone

The number is yours for the verification window and then returns to the pool. The account does not need it again unless you reinstall the app or change phones, at which point WhatsApp asks for a fresh code on the same number. Keep chat backups on, and if you expect to move devices, rent the number again at that time or register the new device first.

Turn on two-step verification before anything else. It is a six-digit PIN under Settings, Account, and WhatsApp asks for it on any new registration attempt. With the PIN set, holding the number is not enough to take the account, which is exactly the protection you want for a number you do not keep.
