Discord creates an account with only an email. It asks for a phone number to join servers that set their verification level to highest, to post in some communities, and to lift a claim that an account looks suspicious. The code is six digits by SMS. One number verifies one account at a time, so a second account for moderation, for a bot's owner, or for a community you keep apart from your main identity needs its own.

The phone requirement is a server-side setting chosen by moderators to keep out throwaway accounts, and it is effective precisely because Discord refuses the ranges that throwaway accounts come from. A number from a real mobile carrier passes, and your own number stays off an account that is going to sit in a hundred public servers.

Why some servers demand a phone

A server owner can set verification to require a verified email, a verified phone, or both. Large public servers, especially ones that have dealt with raids, choose the phone level because it is the one throwaway accounts cannot pass cheaply. When you try to join or post, Discord prompts for a number, sends the code, and unlocks the server once it lands.

Discord also asks for a phone on its own when an account's behaviour trips a check: joining many servers quickly, sending the same message repeatedly, or logging in from an unusual place. The prompt is the same, and the same number clears it.

One account per number, and what that means

A number can be attached to only one Discord account at a time. Verifying a second account with the same number moves the verification and un-verifies the first. So a second account needs a second number, and your own number can hold only one.

Discord refuses VoIP ranges and the shared numbers on free SMS sites; the error says the number is invalid or already in use. The numbers here come from real mobile carrier allocations and are yours alone for the window, which is what the check wants.

After the code

The number stays attached to the account as a recovery route until you remove it under User Settings, My Account. Add an authenticator app for two-factor first, and a backup code set, and then removing the phone costs nothing. Some servers re-check the phone requirement on join, and Discord shows verified status, not the number, so removal after verification does not eject you from servers you already joined.

If an account is later asked to re-verify, rent a number again at that moment. Keep the account's recovery on an email you own so it never depends on the number. Pricing per country is on the pricing page.

How to verify Discord without your own number

  1. Pick Discord and a country

Choose Discord in the app, then any country with live stock. Prices are shown before you commit.

  2. Use the number we allocate

Paste the number into the Discord sign-up form and request the code.

  3. Read the code in your dashboard

The SMS appears the moment it arrives, usually well under a minute. If nothing lands, the charge reverses automatically.

Why does a server say I need a verified phone?

The server owner set verification to the highest level, which requires a phone on the account. Discord sends a code to the number you add and the server unlocks once it lands.

Can two Discord accounts share one number?

No. A number verifies one account at a time, and verifying a second moves it. A second account needs a second number.

Discord says the number is invalid. What happened?

That message is what Discord shows for VoIP and free-site ranges. The numbers here are real mobile carrier ranges, so if you see it, cancel the activation, which refunds, and pick another country.

Can I remove the number after verifying?

Yes, under My Account, once an authenticator app and backup codes are set. Servers you have joined keep you; they check verified status, not the number itself.
