Instagram lets you sign up with an email, then very often asks for a phone number anyway, either at the end of signup or the first time the account does anything that looks automated. The code is six digits by SMS. A brand account, a second profile kept apart from a personal one, or a profile used to test a client's content flow each need their own number for that check, and a rented number is the cleanest answer.

Instagram belongs to Meta, and Meta's Accounts Center links Instagram, Facebook and Messenger under one identity. A number added to Instagram can surface as a recovery route across all of them. Verifying with a rented number and then setting recovery to an email keeps the new profile out of that web entirely.

When the phone prompt appears

New accounts created from a browser, from a VPN, or from a device that already holds other Instagram accounts are the ones most likely to be asked for a phone number. So are accounts that follow or like quickly in their first hour. The prompt is Instagram's way of raising the cost of bulk signups, and a real mobile number satisfies it.

After the code, Instagram treats the number as a login method and a recovery route. Under Settings, Accounts Center, Personal details, you can see it and remove it once an email is in place. Two-factor authentication can then run through an authenticator app rather than SMS, which is the setting that makes a rented number safe to leave behind.

One number, few accounts

Instagram caps how many accounts a single number can confirm, and the cap is low. That is the practical reason a second profile needs a second number rather than your own again. Numbers from free SMS sites fail for the same reason. They used up their quota of accounts long before you arrived, and Instagram either refuses them or challenges the resulting account with a selfie video within a day.

The numbers here are from real mobile ranges and allocated to you alone for the window. Instagram's check is on the range and on the number's history, and both are clean.

Brand, test and second accounts, within Meta's rules

Instagram allows up to five accounts on one device and switches between them from the profile menu, so a second account is a supported feature. Brand accounts, a creator's separate personal profile, and a profile used to test how a client's content appears are all ordinary. What Meta prohibits is impersonation, buying engagement, and returning after a permanent removal, and it detects those through device and behaviour signals that a number does not change.

If the account is for a client, keep its recovery email and two-factor app under the client's control from day one. The rented number is for the code; the account should never depend on it.
