UK mobile numbers all start with 07 when dialled inside the country, and with +44 7 from anywhere else. Services that serve UK customers often accept only that shape, and some check that the number belongs to a UK mobile network. A rented UK number meets both conditions for one confirmation code, without a UK SIM or a contract.

The UK mobile market runs on four networks, EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three, with many smaller brands renting space on them. A number from any of those ranges looks like an ordinary UK mobile to the service checking it, and that is all the check asks.

Rented UK +44 mobile number receiving an SMS code

Writing a UK number in a form

Inside the UK a mobile number is eleven digits starting 07. Internationally the leading 0 is dropped, so 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123. Forms get this wrong in both directions. If a form has a +44 picker, enter the number without the 0. If it has a single free-text field, the full +44 form usually works.

Numbers starting 07 are mobile. Numbers starting 01, 02 or 03 are landlines or non-geographic, and most services will not send an SMS to them, which is a common reason a UK number someone already has will not work for a code.

When a UK number is the right one

A UK-only app or marketplace that checks for +44. A business that trades in the UK and wants its accounts on a UK number. A developer testing how a sign-up behaves for UK users, including the message wording a UK mobile receives. A person who moved away from the UK and still needs to confirm an account on a British service.

Some UK services, banks especially, also check who owns the number against identity records, and a rented number will not pass that. For those, the answer is your own number. For the rest, which is most apps and marketplaces, a rented UK mobile works as any other would.

After the code

The number stays yours for the activation window and then returns to the pool. Before that happens, set up the account's recovery on an email you own, and add an authenticator app if the service offers one. That way the account never needs the rented number again.

If a service wants a code again later, for a new device say, rent another UK number at that point. Prices for UK numbers vary by service, and the current ones are on the pricing page.

Do I include the 0 after +44?

No. Drop the leading 0 when using +44, so 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123. Inside a UK-only field that expects 07, keep the 0 and leave out +44.

Which UK networks are the numbers on?

Real UK mobile ranges, which belong to EE, Vodafone, O2, Three and the brands that run on them. The service checking the number sees an ordinary UK mobile.

Will a rented UK number work for my bank?

Usually not. UK banks check that the number is registered to you. Use your own number for banking and a rented one for apps and marketplaces.

What if no code arrives?

The activation cancels itself when the window ends and the full price returns to your balance.
