Microsoft SMS VERIFICATION Receive the Microsoft code on a rented number.

A Microsoft account is the sign-in for Outlook.com, Xbox, Windows, Microsoft 365, Skype and Teams at once. When you create one, Microsoft sometimes shows a puzzle and sometimes asks for a phone number to prove a person is signing up, depending on the network and device. The code is a short SMS. A rented number clears that prompt and keeps a personal line off an account that will reach into so many services.

Microsoft limits how many accounts a single phone number can verify, and it refuses VoIP ranges for the check. The numbers rented here are real mobile ranges and are allocated to you alone for the window. A family member's Xbox profile, a clean Outlook address for a small business, or a test account for Windows deployment all fit.

When Microsoft asks for a phone

Signup from a new browser, a VPN, or a network that has created many accounts is more likely to hit the phone step. So is an existing account that signs in from an unusual place, which Microsoft may lock until you confirm a code. The prompt says Microsoft wants to make sure you are the person using the account.

Xbox is a common case. A new Microsoft account for a second player on a console, or a child account added through Microsoft Family Safety, may ask for a number during setup. Microsoft owns Activision Blizzard, and a Battle.net account linked to it has its own phone check.

Making the account independent of the number

Under account.microsoft.com, Security, Advanced security options, you can add the Microsoft Authenticator app, a recovery email and a recovery code. Do all three on the first day. Microsoft can then verify you through the app, and you can remove the rented phone from the list of security info.

Microsoft waits before it lets new security info replace old, and it emails the account when security info changes. If you add the authenticator right away, that waiting period ends before the rented number leaves the pool.

Region, stores and the number's country

The Microsoft Store and Xbox region follow the country chosen on the account profile. The phone number's country does not set them. Choose a number from the country you live in or the country of the business, for example a Mexican number for an account run from Mexico, so the signals on the account agree.

Microsoft's services agreement bans accounts created to send spam or to avoid an enforcement action. Separate accounts for different people and purposes are allowed, and our acceptable use policy says the same.
