Canada shares the +1 country code with the United States, and that causes more trouble than it looks. A Canadian number and a US number are the same length and format. Services tell them apart by area code, so a Canadian app that wants a Canadian customer, or a US app that serves only the US, will check the area code and accept one or the other.
A rented Canadian number comes from a Canadian area code on a real mobile range. Services that ask for Canada see what they expect, and you avoid putting your own number on an account you may use only once.
How services tell Canada from the US
Both countries use ten-digit numbers after +1, with a three-digit area code first. Canadian area codes include 416 and 647 for Toronto, 604 for Vancouver and 514 for Montreal. A service that looks up a number gets back the country from the area code and the line type from the carrier, and it can refuse on either.
That is why a US number does not help with a Canadian-only service, and the reverse is also true. When a form says Canada, give it a Canadian area code.
Carriers and what they mean for codes
Most Canadian mobile numbers belong to Rogers, Bell or Telus, or to the brands that run on their networks, such as Fido, Virgin Plus and Koodo. To a service checking the number, all of these read as Canadian mobile. VoIP numbers from apps that hand out free Canadian numbers read as VoIP and are often refused, just as they are in the US.
Canadian carriers filter business text traffic, like US carriers do. If one service's code does not come through, the activation refunds, and a second number usually works.
Common reasons to want one
Canadian delivery, banking-adjacent and marketplace apps that serve only Canada. A developer checking how a bilingual sign-up flow behaves for a Quebec number. A business opening a Canadian account kept apart from its US one. Someone who moved to Canada and wants a local number on an account before their own contract starts.
Once the account exists, move its recovery to an email you control. The rented number goes back to the pool when the activation window ends.
Is a Canadian number different from a US number?
Same format and the same +1 code, but different area codes. Services read the area code to tell the country, so a Canadian-only service needs a Canadian area code.
Which area code will I get?
A Canadian one from the current stock. Services check that the area code is Canadian and the line is mobile, and rarely care which city it belongs to.
Why do free Canadian numbers get refused?
Free app numbers are VoIP, and many services refuse VoIP after a carrier lookup. The numbers here are real mobile ranges.
What happens if the code never arrives?
The activation cancels at the end of the window and the full price returns to your balance.
