Spotify SMS VERIFICATION Receive the Spotify code on a rented number.

Spotify accounts can be created with an email, a Google, Apple or Facebook login, or, in many countries, a phone number that receives a login code by SMS. People who choose the phone route for a second account, such as a work account for office playlists, a separate profile for a shop's background music, or a test account for an app built on Spotify's API, need a number for each. A rented number supplies it.

An account created with a phone number signs in with a code sent to that number. That makes the rented number the only way into the account until you add another. Add an email address and a password in the account settings as soon as the account exists, and sign in with those from then on.

Phone login means codes every time

With phone login, Spotify sends a new code whenever you sign in on a device that is not already logged in. On a rented number that works for as long as the activation window lasts and not after. Add an email to the account from the account page and set a password, or link a Google or Apple login you control.

Once another method is in place, the phone number is no longer needed to get back in, and you can remove it.

Country, plans and what a number does not change

A Spotify account belongs to the country where it was created, which sets the catalogue, the price and the payment options. Free accounts can be used abroad only for a limited time before Spotify asks you to update the country, and Premium follows the country of the payment method. The number's country does not override any of that.

Family and Duo plans require members to live at the same address, and Spotify can ask members to confirm it. Using separate numbers does not change that requirement, and plans shared outside a household can be cancelled.

Test accounts for developers

Apps using the Spotify Web API start in development mode, where only users added in the developer dashboard can sign in. Developers often create dedicated test accounts to check how the app behaves for a free listener and for a Premium subscriber, with playlists and listening history that are not their own.

Keep those accounts to testing. Spotify's terms rule out artificial streams, meaning plays generated by bots or account farms to inflate an artist's numbers, and it removes the streams and the accounts behind them. Our acceptable use policy forbids the same.
