Dutch mobile numbers all begin with 06, which becomes +31 6 from abroad. Dutch apps and marketplaces often accept only that shape when they send a confirmation code. A rented Dutch mobile fits the check, so a seller outside the Netherlands, a tester working on a Dutch sign-up flow, or anyone keeping a personal number private can get through with one code.
Three networks run Dutch mobile ranges: KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido, the name T-Mobile Netherlands took in 2023. Budget brands such as Lebara and Simyo rent space on them. A service looking up a rented number sees a Dutch mobile and sends the code.
From 06 to +31 6
A Dutch mobile is ten digits written as 06 12345678. Internationally the 0 is dropped, leaving +31 6 12345678. A form with a +31 selector wants the nine digits starting with 6. Keeping the 0 after +31 is the usual reason a Dutch form says a valid number is wrong.
Area codes like 020 for Amsterdam and 010 for Rotterdam belong to landlines. Numbers starting 085 or 088 are non-geographic. None of these can receive a verification text.
What a Dutch number opens
Marktplaats is the classifieds site most Dutch people sell on, and it asks for a phone number before some listings go live. Vinted and food delivery apps do the same. A business serving Dutch customers wants its WhatsApp on a +31 number, and a developer testing iDEAL checkout flows wants to see the SMS a Dutch user gets.
Belgium shares the Dutch language but uses +32, with mobiles starting 04. Flemish services check for the Belgian code, so a Belgian number is the right one there.
Before the window closes
Add an email you own as the account's recovery route and switch on an authenticator if offered. The rented number goes back to the pool after the activation window, and the account keeps working without it.
Dutch banks and DigiD, the government login, verify identity separately and should stay on your own number. If the code for an app never arrives, the activation refunds automatically.
Do I keep the 0 after +31?
No. 06 12345678 becomes +31 6 12345678. Enter +31 and the nine digits starting with 6.
Which networks are the numbers on?
Real Dutch mobile ranges on KPN, VodafoneZiggo and Odido, formerly T-Mobile.
Will a Dutch number work for a Belgian service?
Usually not. Belgian services check for +32, even when the site is in Dutch.
What if the code does not arrive?
The activation cancels at the end of the window and the full price returns to your balance.
