Telegram SMS VERIFICATION Receive the Telegram code on a rented number.

Telegram registers an account against a phone number and then, unlike most messengers, lets you hide that number from everyone. That combination is why people run more than one: a channel admin account, a bot owner, a separate identity for a community, or a work account that does not leak a personal line. Each needs its own number for the registration code, and a rented number covers that single moment.

The mobile app holds up to three accounts at once and switches between them, so a second or third account is a supported feature rather than a workaround. What Telegram does not allow is registering with VoIP ranges, which is why a number from a real carrier range is the difference between a code that arrives and one that does not.

Where the code goes, which is not always SMS

If you already have Telegram open on another device with the same number, Telegram sends the login code there first and only falls back to SMS if you ask. For a brand-new registration on a rented number there is no existing session, so the code comes by SMS, and if that fails Telegram offers a call. The code is five digits and it appears in your MarioSMS dashboard the moment it lands.

After registration, set a cloud password under Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification. Telegram asks for it on any new login in addition to the code, so the account is safe even from someone who later holds the same number.

Hiding the number from contacts

By default, Telegram shows your number to your contacts and lets anyone who has it find you. Both are settings. Under Privacy and Security, set Phone Number to Nobody and Who can find me by my number to My Contacts, and the account becomes reachable only by username. A channel admin or a community account wants exactly this setup, and it makes a rented number a sensible registration number, because nobody needs to see it afterwards.

Usernames are the public handle. Choose one at registration and share that. The number never has to leave the settings screen.

Why free numbers fail here in particular

Telegram is a heavily automated target, so it is strict about ranges. Numbers from the shared pools on free SMS sites have usually been registered many times already, and Telegram either refuses them or bans the resulting account within hours. VoIP ranges are refused outright. The numbers here are single-use for your window, from real mobile allocations, and that is what a clean registration needs.

Some countries' numbers are treated more cautiously by Telegram than others, and stock for Telegram shifts by country through the day. The app shows only the countries with live stock for it, so a country missing right now may be back within hours.
