Facebook accepts an email at signup and then, for most new accounts, insists on a phone number before the profile can do anything useful. The confirmation code arrives by SMS with an FB- prefix. Meta treats the number as an identity anchor across Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, which is the strongest reason to give a fresh account a rented number rather than the one that already holds your personal profile.

A Facebook account is also a login for thousands of other sites through Facebook Login, so the number attached to it reaches further than the profile. Verify with a rented number, set recovery to an email you own, and turn on two-factor through an authenticator app, and the account is both usable and independent of a line you do not keep.

What Facebook does with the number

The number becomes a login identifier, a recovery route, and a way for people who have it to find you unless you change the setting. Under Settings, Privacy, How people find and contact you, set the phone lookup to Only me. Under Security and login, add an authenticator app for two-factor and the number stops being the account's weak point.

Meta also uses phone numbers to link accounts. If the same number confirms a Facebook and an Instagram account, Accounts Center will offer to join them. For a business page manager or a profile you want kept apart, that linking is the thing to avoid, and a separate rented number avoids it.

How Facebook checks the number

Facebook checks the range and the history. VoIP ranges and free-site numbers are refused or lead to an account that is locked within a day and asked for a government ID. Real mobile carrier ranges pass, which is what the numbers here are. Facebook also caps how many accounts a number can confirm, so a number that already holds your personal profile will not confirm a second.

Facebook is quicker than most platforms to ask for a photo of ID when an account trips a check. A clean number does not prevent that on its own. A slow, human-looking first week helps more. Fill in the profile, add a photo, and do not friend a hundred people on day one.

Second profiles and business use, inside Meta's terms

Meta's terms allow one personal profile per person. A second personal profile that pretends to be someone else is the thing they prohibit, and it will be removed regardless of the number that confirmed it. What the terms do allow is Pages and business assets managed from a profile, and Meta now offers additional profiles under one account for exactly the separation people used to create second accounts for.

So the honest uses are a profile for managing client Pages, a business account under a company name, and testing how content renders for a new user. For those, a rented number for the code plus recovery on a company email is the right shape.
