Belgian mobiles start with 04 at home and +32 4 from abroad. Belgium has required every prepaid SIM to be linked to an identified person since 2017, so getting a local number of your own takes an eID or a passport and a registration step. A rented Belgian mobile receives one verification code without any of that, for an app or marketplace that wants a +32 number.

Proximus, Orange Belgium and BASE, owned by Telenet, carry most Belgian mobile numbers. Services checking a rented number see a Belgian mobile on one of those networks.

Reading a Belgian mobile

At home a mobile is ten digits, such as 0470 12 34 56. From abroad the 0 goes, giving +32 470 12 34 56. Forms with a +32 selector want the nine digits starting with 4.

Landlines use short area codes, 02 for Brussels, 03 for Antwerp and 09 for Ghent. They are one digit shorter than mobiles and cannot receive verification texts. A form that counts digits will often flag a Belgian mobile entered with the 0 still in place, so remove it before submitting.

Three languages, one country code

A Belgian service may run in Dutch, French or German, and people outside Belgium sometimes pick a Dutch or French number because the site language matches. The check looks at +32 regardless. Flemish classifieds on 2dehands, Vinted and food delivery through Deliveroo all expect a Belgian number.

The reverse also applies. A French or Dutch service local to its own country will usually refuse +32, even with the interface in the same language.

After verification

The rented number is yours until the activation window ends. Set a recovery email and, where available, an authenticator before then, so the account never needs the number again.

Belgian banks and itsme, the national digital identity app, verify the person behind the number. A rented number is for apps and marketplaces, not for those.

Do I drop the 0 after +32?

Yes. 0470 12 34 56 becomes +32 470 12 34 56.

Why do Belgian SIMs need ID?

Since 2017, Belgian law has required prepaid SIMs to be linked to an identified person. A rented number skips buying a SIM for one code.

Will a Belgian number work on a French or Dutch site?

Only if the service serves Belgium. Services local to France or the Netherlands check for their own country code.

What if no code arrives?

The activation cancels at the end of the window and the full price returns to your balance.
