Norwegian numbers are eight digits with no leading zero, and mobile numbers start with 4 or 9. That makes them some of the easiest numbers in Europe to type into a form. Norwegian services read that first digit to tell a mobile from a landline, and a rented Norwegian mobile passes the check for one confirmation code.

Telenor, Telia and Ice run Norway's mobile networks, with smaller brands renting capacity from them. Norway is a small market, so there are fewer spare numbers than in larger countries, and stock for a given service can come and go during the day. The app shows only what is live.

No trunk zero, eight digits

A Norwegian mobile number looks like 412 34 567 or 912 34 567. There is no trunk 0 to drop, so from abroad you add +47 and the rest stays the same: +47 412 34 567. Forms with a +47 picker want the eight digits exactly as written.

Landlines start with other digits, such as 22 and 23 in Oslo. Most services refuse to send an SMS to them. Numbers starting 4 or 9 are the mobile ranges a verification check expects.

Local accounts and Nordic neighbours

Delivery apps, classifieds and ticket sites that serve Norway confirm accounts by SMS to a +47 number, and Wolt is one of them. Businesses selling to Norwegian customers keep WhatsApp on a local number, and developers test Norwegian-language sign-up flows on one.

Norway is outside the EU, and services that group EU countries together often handle it separately. A Swedish or Danish number will not pass a check that asks for Norway, so match the number to the country the service is based in.

Vipps, BankID and what a number cannot do

Norwegian banks, Vipps payments and public services log in with BankID, issued through a Norwegian bank to a person with a Norwegian identity number. The mobile number is not what those services check, and a rented number has no place there.

For apps that only send an SMS code, the rented number works for the activation window. Put the account's recovery on an email you control before the window ends. If no code arrives, the activation refunds automatically.
