Wolt is a food and grocery delivery app founded in Helsinki and owned by DoorDash since 2022. It signs you in with a link sent to your email, and asks for a phone number that couriers and restaurants can reach you on, confirmed by SMS. People rent a number for a Wolt for Work account kept apart from personal orders, for testing a restaurant's ordering flow, or to avoid putting a personal line on yet another app.

Wolt runs in Finland, Germany, Poland and many other countries, and it expects a phone number from the country where you order. The numbers here come from real mobile ranges in each market.

What Wolt does with the number

The number on a Wolt account appears on each order for the courier. If the courier cannot find the door, they call or text it. That makes a rented number a poor choice for deliveries you will receive in person after the rental window ends, since calls to it will not reach you. The app also shows the courier's position on a map, so most deliveries finish without a call. The number is there for the ones that do not.

For those orders, change the number in the app's profile settings to one you answer before ordering. A rented number fits the signup step, test orders during the window, and accounts where someone else takes the delivery calls. A shared office account can list a reception desk number instead.

Promo codes and the new-customer rule

Wolt gives discounts to new customers and through referral codes. Its terms limit those to one per person, and Wolt links accounts through payment card, delivery address and device. Orders placed on extra accounts to reuse a first-order discount can be cancelled and the discount charged back. Referral credit works the same way, paid out once per new person.

A separate account for business meals, for a flatmate who orders on their own, or for a restaurant testing its menu on the customer app is ordinary use. Wolt for Work lets a company pay for staff meals through a business profile, which keeps those receipts out of personal orders.

Signing in without the phone

Wolt sends a sign-in link to your email, so access to the account runs through the inbox. Keep that email one you control and the account stays yours when the rented number goes back to the pool. If the old inbox is closing, change the email in profile settings first, because a closed inbox would lock the account.

Wolt's parent company runs DoorDash in the US, Canada and Australia, and those apps verify the number in a similar way.
