Italian mobile numbers start with 3, landlines with 0, and Italy keeps that 0 when a landline is dialled from abroad. That quirk is why forms sometimes mangle Italian numbers. For a mobile it does not matter, since there is no 0 to keep or lose. A rented Italian mobile receives one verification code without the codice fiscale that Italian carriers ask for when selling a SIM.
Four networks run Italian mobile ranges: TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad. Services that look up a rented number see an Italian mobile on one of them, which is all a verification check needs.
Why Italy keeps its zeros
Most European countries drop the trunk 0 after the country code. Italy does not. A Rome landline, 06 1234 5678 at home, becomes +39 06 1234 5678 from abroad. A form built for German or British numbers may strip that 0 and break the number.
Mobiles avoid the problem entirely. They start with 3, as in 347 123 4567, and read +39 347 123 4567 internationally. Enter +39 and the digits starting with 3, and nothing gets lost.
Italian services people verify
Classifieds on Subito, dating on Hinge, and messaging on WhatsApp and Telegram are the usual reasons for an Italian number. Someone running a small business that sells into Italy wants a local number on its WhatsApp account, because Italian customers message a +39 number more readily than a foreign one.
San Marino has its own code, +378, even though it sits inside Italy. A service local to San Marino will not take a +39 number, and Italian services seldom accept a San Marino one.
After the code
Set up recovery on an email you control before the activation window closes. The number returns to the pool after that, and an account with its own recovery route never needs it again.
Italian banks, SPID digital identity and anything regulated check who you are, and a rented number plays no part in that. If a code does not arrive, the activation refunds on its own.
Do Italian numbers keep the 0 after +39?
Landlines do, mobiles have none. A mobile starting 3 is entered as +39 followed by the digits starting with 3.
Which networks are the numbers on?
Real Italian mobile ranges belonging to TIM, Vodafone, WindTre and Iliad.
Does a San Marino service accept +39?
Usually not. San Marino uses +378, and its local services check for it.
What if no code arrives?
The activation cancels itself at the end of the window and the full price returns to your balance.
