Snapchat creates an account with a phone number or an email, and it asks to verify a phone for most new accounts sooner or later. The number does more on Snapchat than on most apps. Anyone with it saved in their contacts can be shown your account in Quick Add, which is why a separate account for a brand, a creator or a clean start benefits from a number nobody has saved.

A rented number confirms the account and has no contact history in anyone's phone book, so the contact matching has nothing to connect. Your personal number stays with the account people already know you by.

How Snapchat matches accounts to contacts

When a user allows Snapchat to read their contacts, Snapchat compares those numbers with the numbers on its accounts and suggests matches. Under Settings, Privacy Controls, you can turn off being shown in Quick Add and stop people finding you by number. Those settings help, and a number that nobody has saved helps more reliably.

For a brand or creator account this separation is often the whole reason for a second number. Customers find the account by its username or Snapcode, and your family's phones never suggest it.

The code and the numbers that fail

Snapchat sends a six-digit code by SMS, and offers a call if the text does not arrive. A rented number receives SMS, so wait for the text. Numbers from free SMS sites are often refused, and accounts created on them are more likely to be locked soon after, because Snapchat has seen those numbers many times. The numbers here are real mobile ranges. Codes expire quickly, so enter it as soon as it shows in your dashboard.

Snapchat also locks accounts that sign in through unofficial third-party apps or plugins. A clean number does not protect an account from that, so use the official app.

Making the account independent of the number

Under Settings, add and confirm an email address, then turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app instead of SMS. With both in place, a password reset or a new login does not depend on the rented number, and you can remove it. Save the backup code Snapchat gives you when you set up two-factor.

Snapchat's community guidelines allow separate accounts for separate purposes and forbid impersonation, spam and evading a ban. Our acceptable use policy matches that. For short video on other platforms, TikTok and Instagram work the same way.
