Telegram Code Not Received: How to Fix It

Updated · MarioSMS team

If your Telegram SMS code is not arriving, open Telegram on any other device where you are still logged in and look for a message from the official Telegram account. Telegram delivers the login code inside the app to an active session first, and only falls back to SMS when no session exists or you ask for it. This one behaviour explains most “Telegram code not received” reports, because the code did arrive, inside the app rather than by text.

Where did Telegram send the code?

The login screen tells you. Read it before requesting anything:

  1. “We’ve sent the code to the Telegram app on your other device.” The code is in a chat from Telegram on your phone, tablet, or desktop client. No SMS is coming yet.
  2. “We’ve sent you an SMS with the code.” The message went to your carrier. This is where filtering and delays happen.
  3. “Telegram will call you.” A voice call reads the five-digit code aloud.

If you see the first message and no longer have that device, tap Didn’t get the code? and choose SMS. On many accounts Telegram waits a minute or two before it offers the SMS or call option.

What to do, in order

  1. Check every logged-in device. Phone, tablet, Telegram Desktop, and web sessions all receive the code in the Telegram chat.
  2. Read the destination line on the login screen to confirm app, SMS, or call.
  3. Request SMS once through “Didn’t get the code?” if no session is available.
  4. Ask for a call if the SMS does not arrive within two minutes. Calls use a different route from text messages and often get through when SMS is filtered.
  5. Check the country code. A number entered without its international prefix sends the message nowhere.
  6. Stop after two or three attempts. Telegram limits how often one number can request codes, and each extra request can extend the wait from minutes to many hours.
  7. Come back after the timer clears rather than retrying during it.

For what happens between Telegram and your carrier once an SMS is sent, the guide to why codes go missing walks through the route.

Why repeated requests make it worse

Telegram treats a burst of code requests from one number as suspicious. After a few attempts the app shows a wait timer, and requesting again before it expires does not send a code. The timer can run for hours on numbers that have hit the limit several times.

Carrier filtering is the other quiet failure. Login codes travel as application-to-person messages, which carriers screen differently from personal texts, and a dropped one-time password produces no error on either side. Telegram believes it sent the message; your handset never sees it.

When a new number helps, and when it does not

A rented number does not help if you are trying to get back into an existing account. Telegram sends the code to the number registered on that account, and a different number starts a different account. If the account has a cloud password, you will also need that password after the code, whatever number you use.

A rented number helps in these cases:

  • You are registering a new account and your own number is filtered, refused, or already tied to your main account.
  • You want a second account for a channel, a bot owner, or a community, kept separate from your personal line.

A Telegram number from MarioSMS is a real mobile number, allocated to you for one verification window. A new number has no existing session, so its code comes by SMS or call. If nothing arrives, the activation cancels and the price returns to your balance. Separate accounts for channels and communities fit the acceptable use policy; spam and impersonation do not.

After you get in

Set a cloud password under Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification, and add a recovery email to it. Then review Active Sessions on the same screen and end any device you no longer use, since those sessions are where Telegram will send your next login code.
