X Verification Code Not Received

Updated · MarioSMS team

If your X verification code is not received, check three things first. Is X asking for a code by SMS at all? Have you requested it so many times that X paused sending? Will X text that number? Most failures on X, the platform formerly called Twitter, come down to one of those, and the fix depends on whether you are signing up, unlocking a new account, or signing in to one you already own.

Why does X stop sending codes?

X restricts text messages more than most platforms. Since March 2023, two-factor authentication by SMS is available only to X Premium subscribers. If your account used SMS two-factor before and you are not on Premium, X turned it off, and sign-in codes by text stopped coming. The account now expects an authenticator app or a security key.

The codes X does send by text count as A2P traffic, and some carriers filter them. X also stops sending after repeated requests from the same number or account, and requests made during that pause fail without an error.

What to do, in order

  1. Work out which flow you are in. A sign-in challenge on an existing account and a phone wall on a new account need different fixes.
  2. On an existing account, open your authenticator app, or use the backup code X showed when you set up two-factor.
  3. Check the number format. Add the country code and drop the leading zero, so 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123.
  4. Request the code once, then wait. Repeated taps on “Resend” extend the pause.
  5. Look in filtered and spam messages on the phone, where messages from short codes can land.
  6. Try a different mobile number if X refuses yours or nothing arrives after a wait.

The general reasons codes go missing between the sender and the handset are covered in why the SMS code did not arrive.

What if you are locked out of your own X account?

A rented number cannot get you back in. X sends codes for an existing account to the phone number already on it, and a different number never receives them. If you lost that number and have neither an authenticator nor a backup code, use the account access form in X’s help center. X may ask you to confirm the email address on the account, and no shortcut skips that review.

Where does a rented number help?

A new number fixes the problem when your own line is the obstacle and you are allowed to use another one:

  • A new account is locked behind the phone wall and your number is filtered, refused, or already used for too many accounts. X caps how many accounts a single number can verify.
  • You are adding a phone number to an account you can already sign in to.
  • Your carrier or roaming drops X’s texts, and you need the code on a working mobile line.

MarioSMS numbers come from real mobile carrier ranges, so they pass where VoIP numbers are refused. Rent one on the X verification page and enter it on the lock screen. The code usually arrives within a minute, and if nothing lands the charge refunds automatically. The full signup walkthrough is in how to verify X without your phone number.

Once the account works, confirm the email, turn on authenticator-app two-factor, and save the backup code. A brand account, a labeled bot or a test account is fine under the acceptable use policy. Ban evasion and spam networks are not.
