WhatsApp Verification Code Not Received

Updated · MarioSMS team

A WhatsApp registration code goes missing for five reasons, and they look different from each other once you know where to look. Your carrier dropped the message, the number you typed does not match the SIM in the phone, the line cannot receive business SMS at all, you spent the retry attempts, or WhatsApp is asking for something that is not the SMS code. Work through them in that order, because the cheapest checks are also the most common causes.

Which of the five causes do you have?

What to do, in order

  1. Check the number format. Enter the country code and drop the leading zero. A German mobile written 0151 23456789 goes in as +49 151 23456789. A wrong format sends the code to a number that does not exist.
  2. Confirm which SIM you typed. On a dual-SIM phone the code goes to the number you entered, not to the SIM you use for data. If the second line sits in a drawer, you will never see the message.
  3. Clear the filters on your own handset. An iPhone sorts messages from unknown senders into a separate tab, and Silence Unknown Callers sends WhatsApp’s voice fallback straight to voicemail. Android spam blockers do the same for short codes.
  4. Toggle airplane mode for ten seconds, or restart the phone, so it re-registers with the network. A handset that lost its SMS channel looks online in every other way.
  5. Wait for the countdown, then choose “Call me”. WhatsApp reads the six digits out loud. The call travels over the voice network, which is not filtered the way business SMS is, so it gets through when the text does not.
  6. Stop after two failed attempts. Each one makes the next wait longer.

Why the retry timer keeps growing

WhatsApp rate-limits registration per number. The first retry is available in about a minute, and each further attempt pushes the window out, to several hours after a handful of tries. Nothing you do on the phone shortens it, and reinstalling the app does not reset it. Wait for the stated time, check the number format, and have the call option ready for the next attempt.

Is it the code, or the two-step PIN?

If you turned on two-step verification, WhatsApp asks for a six-digit PIN after the registration code. People read that second prompt as the code failing and request another SMS, which burns an attempt and extends the timer. The PIN screen says “Enter your PIN” rather than naming your phone number. If you cannot remember it and you added an email address when you set it up, WhatsApp can send a reset link there. Without that email, the account waits seven days before the PIN can be cleared.

Roaming, ported numbers and new SIMs

Some carriers do not deliver business SMS while you are roaming, even though calls and data work normally. A number ported to a new network in the last few days can also sit in a routing gap, where the old carrier no longer accepts the message and the new one does not yet. In both cases the voice call is the reliable route. The mechanics behind this, including why some routes drop these messages entirely, are in our guide on codes that never arrive.

When a rented number cannot help

If you are trying to get back into an account that is already registered to your own number, renting a different number does nothing for you. WhatsApp sends the code to the number on the account, so it has to reach that line. If you no longer control the number at all, WhatsApp will not move the account for you, and the practical route is a fresh registration on a line you do hold.

When a rented number is the fix

Renting a number helps when the code has somewhere else to go: you are setting up a second account, a WhatsApp Business profile for a company, or a test account for an integration, and your own line is either already in use or being refused. A number from a real mobile range receives the registration SMS where a free web number is rejected, and rented WhatsApp numbers come from those ranges. Set the two-step PIN and add a recovery email on the day you register, so the account never depends on a line you hold briefly. Second accounts and business profiles are ordinary uses under our acceptable use policy; impersonating someone else is not, whatever number verified it.
