How to Verify Amazon Without Your Phone Number

Updated · MarioSMS team

You can open an Amazon account with only an email address, but Amazon usually asks for a phone number before long. It asks when a new account looks unfamiliar, when someone signs in from a device or country it has not seen, and always when you register for Seller Central. A rented number answers that check with a six-digit code and keeps your personal line off an account that is shared across Prime Video, Alexa, Kindle and Audible.

That matters because the number does not stay a one-time check. Once added, Amazon lets you sign in with it and sends recovery codes to it, so whatever number you give becomes part of how the account is accessed.

When does Amazon ask for a phone number?

SituationWhat Amazon asks forWhat to do
New buyer account from an unfamiliar browser or networkA phone number and an SMS code before the first orderVerify with a rented number from the marketplace’s country
Sign-in from a new device or countryA code sent to the phone on file, or to an authenticator app if one is setUse the method already on the account
Seller Central registrationA phone number, then two-step verification on every sign-inAdd an authenticator app during onboarding
Prime or Prime Video sign-upNothing extra, since Prime runs on the same accountVerify the account itself once

The second row is where people get stuck. A rented number only helps there if the account still lets you change the number, which is why the recovery setup below matters.

How to verify a new Amazon account with a rented number

  1. Start the account with an email on the marketplace you plan to use, for example amazon.com or amazon.de.
  2. When the phone screen appears, open the MarioSMS app and rent a number for Amazon, in the same country as the marketplace.
  3. Set the country picker correctly and enter the number. Amazon adds the country code from the picker, so do not paste it twice.
  4. Read the six-digit code in your dashboard, usually within a minute, and enter it.
  5. If no code arrives, let the activation close. The price returns to your balance automatically, and a second number often gets through.
  6. Before the activation window ends, open Login and Security, confirm your email, and turn on two-step verification with an authenticator app.

Step 6 is what makes the account independent of the rented number. After it, a sign-in from a new device asks for a code from your authenticator app, which you keep, and the number can return to the pool without leaving a gap in your recovery.

Which country should the number come from?

Match the marketplace. Amazon.com expects a United States number, and Amazon.de expects a German one. A number from the wrong country is not always refused, but it adds one more signal that the account does not fit, and Amazon weighs those signals together when it decides whether to ask for more.

Amazon also checks the number’s range before it sends anything. Ranges from VoIP providers and the shared pools on free SMS sites are commonly refused, which is the usual reason a free number fails at this screen. Our numbers come from mobile carrier ranges, the property Amazon’s check looks for. The US number guide and the German number guide explain how those formats work.

How is Seller Central different?

Seller Central asks for a phone during registration and then uses two-step verification on every sign-in, not only on unusual ones. A number you hold for a single activation window cannot receive the next sign-in code, so set up an authenticator app while you register and treat the phone as a backup that you control.

Seller Central also verifies the business and the person behind it, usually with identity and business documents and a payment card. A phone number does not stand in for any of that. A rented number covers the phone step for a seller account under a company name, and the rest of the checks run as they would for anyone.

What does a rented number not change?

Amazon links accounts by device, payment card and delivery address as well as by phone number. A new number does not hide a connection between two accounts that share a laptop, a card or a delivery address.

Amazon’s rules allow separate buyer accounts for a household member or a business. They do not allow operating several seller accounts without permission or opening a new one after a suspension, and our acceptable use policy draws the same line.

If you are locked out of an existing account and Amazon sends the code to an old number you no longer have, a rented number cannot help. Amazon sends that code to the number already on the account, so the route back is Amazon’s own account recovery, which checks ownership through the email and payment details on file.
