eBay asks for a phone number when you register, when you start selling, and whenever a sign-in looks unusual. The code arrives by SMS. The number then stays on the account as contact information, and eBay can share it with a trading partner who asks for it during a transaction. For a seller, that means strangers who bought a used lens or a pair of trainers can end up holding your personal number.

A rented number handles the SMS check at signup and keeps your own line out of that exchange. Move the account's security onto an authenticator app straight afterwards, and change the contact number on the account to one you control long term, such as a separate work line, whenever you have one.

Where eBay uses the number

New accounts are asked to confirm a phone number before they can buy or list much. Seller accounts go further. eBay collects bank details and identity information for payouts, and the phone number becomes one of several ways eBay confirms that a sign-in or a payout change is really you.

Buyers and sellers in an active transaction can request each other's contact details through eBay, and the registered phone number is part of what they receive. Most sellers never think about this until a buyer rings them after a dispute. A number used only for eBay keeps those calls away from the phone your family uses.

Numbers that fail the check

Like most large marketplaces, eBay is wary of numbers from VoIP apps and the public inboxes on free SMS sites. Those numbers have been used to open accounts that disappear after one fraudulent sale, so a code sent to them may never arrive or the account may be restricted soon after. The numbers here come from real mobile carrier ranges.

Pick the country of the eBay site you are registering on. A seller on eBay.co.uk is better served by a UK number, and a seller on eBay.de by a German one, because a local number fits the address and bank details eBay will see next.

What gets eBay accounts removed

A second account for a small business, kept apart from a personal buying account, is ordinary. eBay's rules turn against accounts opened to get around a suspension or a selling limit, accounts that bid on their own listings, and sellers who take payment and never ship. eBay links accounts through payment methods, bank details, addresses and devices, so a new phone number changes none of that.
