OLX is the classifieds site many people use to sell a sofa, rent a flat or find a used car in Poland, Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Before you can post, OLX asks you to confirm a phone number by SMS. Listings can then show that number to anyone who taps to reveal it, which on a popular ad means calls and messages from people you will never meet.

A rented number from the country of the OLX site passes the confirmation and keeps your own number off public listings. Buyers can still reach you through OLX chat, which is where most conversations happen anyway.

How OLX checks the number

Each OLX country runs its own site and expects a local number. OLX.pl wants a Polish mobile, so a Polish number is the one to use there. OLX.ro expects Romanian, OLX.pt Portuguese. The code comes by SMS and the number is then tied to the account for sign-in checks and listing contact.

OLX limits how many accounts one number can confirm, and it keeps a history of numbers linked to removed accounts. Free-site inboxes carry that history, which is why their codes often fail. The numbers rented here are real mobile ranges, allocated to you alone for the activation window.

Keeping a seller safe

The most common OLX scam targets sellers. Someone messages about your item, then sends a link to a fake delivery or payment page and asks for card details to receive the money. Scammers find their targets through public phone numbers and WhatsApp as often as through OLX chat. Keeping your personal number off the ad removes one of those routes.

Stay inside OLX chat, use OLX's own delivery and payment options where the country offers them, and never type card details on a page reached through a link from a buyer. Hide the phone number on the listing if the site lets you, since chat reaches you just as well.

Second accounts and the rules

A separate account for a small business selling on OLX, or one for a family member's items, is normal. OLX removes accounts that post duplicate ads to flood a category, get around posting limits for paid categories, or defraud buyers. It links accounts by device and payment data, so a new number does not separate them.

Read our acceptable use policy before posting at volume. Once the account exists, set a strong password and keep the recovery email current. The number returns to the pool after the activation window.
