Polish numbers are nine digits with no trunk 0, so they read the same inside Poland and after +48. Since 2016, Polish law has required every prepaid SIM to be registered to a named person, which makes a local number harder to get quickly. A rented Polish mobile receives one verification code for a marketplace, a messaging app or a sign-up test, without a SIM or a PESEL.
Four networks carry most Polish mobiles: Orange, Play, Plus and T-Mobile. Polish mobiles start with 5, 6, 7 or 8, and a service checking a rented number sees a Polish mobile on one of those networks.
No zero, no area code in the way
Poland dropped the trunk 0 from its numbering in 2005. A mobile such as 512 345 678 is dialled the same way at home and from abroad, as +48 512 345 678. Forms that expect a 0 after the country code, as they would for German or British numbers, sometimes add one and break the number.
Landlines are also nine digits but start with a two-digit area code such as 22 for Warsaw or 12 for Kraków. The first digit tells you what it is, and verification texts go only to mobiles.
Selling, messaging and dating on a Polish number
OLX and Allegro are the two big Polish marketplaces, and both ask sellers for a phone number. Vinted is widely used in Poland too. Messaging apps such as imo, WhatsApp and Telegram, and dating apps such as Bumble, round out the common reasons.
Poland is also where many people from Ukraine and Belarus live and work, and a Polish number is often the local one they need on apps. For a service local to Ukraine, choose a Ukrainian number, since those services check for +380.
Keeping the account yours
Set recovery on an email you control and switch on an authenticator where offered, before the activation window ends. The rented number goes back to the pool after that.
Polish banks, BLIK and mObywatel verify identity themselves. A rented number is for apps and marketplaces, and a code that never arrives is refunded automatically.
Is there a 0 after +48?
No. Poland has no trunk 0. The nine digits are the same at home and after +48.
Which digits start a Polish mobile?
5, 6, 7 or 8. Landlines begin with a two-digit area code such as 22 for Warsaw.
Why is a Polish SIM hard to get quickly?
Polish prepaid SIMs must be registered to a named person. A rented number skips buying a SIM for one code.
What if no code arrives?
The activation cancels at the end of the window and the full price returns to your balance.
