Yahoo SMS VERIFICATION Receive the Yahoo code on a rented number.

Yahoo asks for a mobile number when you create an account, sends a code to it, and will not finish sign-up until the code is entered. After that, Yahoo treats the number as a way to sign in and to recover the account. A rented number gets a new Yahoo Mail address through sign-up, and a few settings afterwards stop the account depending on it.

People still open Yahoo addresses for good reasons. A separate inbox for newsletters and shop receipts, a contact address for a small project, or a test inbox for checking how a product's emails render in Yahoo Mail. None of those need your personal number attached.

How Yahoo uses the number after sign-up

Yahoo can sign you in without a password by sending a code to the phone, and it offers the phone first when you forget a password. That is convenient on your own line and a risk on a number you hold for a few minutes. Anyone who later holds the number could request a sign-in code.

So the first job after sign-up is under Account Security. Set a strong password, add a recovery email you control, and turn on two-step verification with an authenticator app. Then remove the phone number, or leave it only if Yahoo refuses to let the account run without one.

Numbers Yahoo will not send codes to

Yahoo's form rejects many internet telephony numbers and the shared numbers listed on free SMS sites, usually with a message that the number is not valid or cannot be used. Those numbers have already created too many accounts. The numbers here are real mobile ranges allocated to you alone for the activation window.

If Yahoo offers a voice call instead of a text, choose the text. A rented number receives SMS, and a call to it goes nowhere you can hear.

Several inboxes, within Yahoo's terms

Yahoo's terms allow more than one account, and plenty of people keep separate personal and project inboxes. What the terms forbid is creating accounts in bulk, sending spam, and impersonating others. Those are detected from sending behaviour, not from the phone number, and a rented number is no use for them. Our acceptable use policy draws the same line.

For a mailbox you want to keep for years, compare the options first. A Google or Microsoft account follows the same pattern of a one-time phone check followed by recovery on an email and an authenticator.
