Zalo is the messenger most people in Vietnam use every day, for family chats, work groups and talking to shops. It registers accounts against a phone number with a one-time code, and Vietnamese businesses often expect customers and suppliers to be reachable there rather than on WhatsApp. A rented number registers a Zalo account for that purpose without a Vietnamese SIM.

Zalo is built by VNG, a Vietnamese company. It accepts foreign numbers as well as Vietnamese ones, but a Vietnamese number makes the account look local to the people and businesses you message, which matters when a supplier searches for you by number.

Registration and what follows

You enter a number, Zalo sends an activation code, and the account exists once you type it in. After that the session lives on the phone. Zalo on a computer signs in by scanning a QR code with the phone app, so the number is not asked for again during normal use.

Zalo does ask again if you reinstall the app or move to a new phone. Before the rented number returns to the pool, set a password in the app's account settings and turn on backups for your messages. With a password set, a new-device login can be confirmed without the original SIM in some cases, and your chat history survives the move.

Why people outside Vietnam need Zalo

Buyers sourcing goods from Vietnamese factories find that sales staff answer on Zalo first. Companies with a Vietnamese office use Zalo groups for teams. Families abroad use it to stay in touch with relatives who never installed another messenger. Travellers and expats want it working before they arrive. Many small Vietnamese shops also take orders through Zalo chat rather than a website.

Businesses that talk to Vietnamese customers at scale use Zalo Official Accounts, which are registered and verified separately. A personal account on a rented number is for individual contact, the same way a second WhatsApp or Viber account would be.

Number history and the rules

A rented number may have had an earlier Zalo registration. Registering on it replaces the old account on that number, and nothing of the earlier holder's chats transfers to you or yours to them. If Zalo shows a warning about the number already being in use, confirming continues the new registration.

Zalo removes accounts that send bulk unsolicited messages or impersonate others, and it restricts accounts reported for spam. Keep to one account per purpose, and see our acceptable use policy before using a number for business contact.
