Zalo is how Vietnam messages. Friends, shops, landlords and employers use it, and a Zalo account starts with a Vietnamese phone number. A rented +84 number lets a business open a Zalo account for Vietnamese customers, or a developer test a Vietnamese sign-up flow, without a Vietnamese SIM, which has to be registered to an ID.

Vietnamese mobile numbers are ten digits starting with 03, 05, 07, 08 or 09. Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone run most of them. The numbers rented here come from those real ranges.

Ten digits since 2018

Vietnam used to have eleven-digit mobile numbers beginning 01. In 2018 those were converted to ten digits, so a number that began 0162 now begins 032. Old contact lists and some older forms still carry the eleven-digit versions, which is a common reason a Vietnamese number looks invalid.

From abroad the leading 0 is dropped, so 091 234 5678 becomes +84 91 234 5678. Most forms want the nine digits after the 0 when +84 is already selected.

Zalo, Google and Shopee

Zalo registers by sending a code to the number and treats the number as the account's identity, much as WhatsApp does. Shops and recruiters talking to Vietnamese contacts are expected to be on Zalo, and a separate account on a rented number keeps that work away from a personal one.

Google often asks for a phone number when an account is created, and teams setting up accounts for staff in Vietnam use a Vietnamese number so the account matches where it is used. Shopee Vietnam asks sellers for a local mobile as well.

What stays with your own number

Vietnamese banks, e-wallets such as MoMo, and government services run their own identity checks. A rented number does not carry an identity, so use your own line for them.

Once the account exists, add an email for recovery where the app allows. Logging in to Zalo on a new phone can ask for a code again, so plan to rent a number again at that point.
