Kenya · +254 A real Kenya number. Rented for one code.

In Kenya a phone number carries more weight than almost anywhere else, because M-Pesa made it a wallet as well as a line. Every SIM is registered to a national ID or passport, and Safaricom holds most of the market. A rented Kenyan mobile number covers the ordinary case, an SMS code for a Kenyan app or a local messenger account, and leaves the money side alone.

Kenyan mobiles run on Safaricom, Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya. The numbers rented here come from real ranges on those networks, so a Kenyan service sees a local mobile when it sends the code.

07 and 01 numbers

Kenyan mobiles are ten digits at home, starting 07 or, for newer ranges, 01, such as 0712 345 678 or 0110 123 456. From abroad the 0 is dropped, giving +254 712 345 678. Forms with a +254 picker want the nine digits after the 0.

The 01 ranges were opened once the 07 ranges started running out. Some older forms still accept only 07, so if a Kenyan form rejects a valid 01 number, the form is out of date.

What Kenyan numbers are used for

Ride and delivery apps in Nairobi, including Bolt, Uber and Glovo, ask for a local number. Businesses selling to Kenyan customers register WhatsApp on a +254 line. Developers test OTP flows across Kenyan networks before launching a product there. Airtel Kenya and Telkom Kenya numbers work the same way as Safaricom ones for these apps.

M-Pesa, Airtel Money and Kenyan banks check the ID registered to the line, so they are not a use for rented numbers.

Set recovery before the window ends

The number is yours for the activation window only. Add a recovery email and turn on two-step verification so the account never needs the rented number again. WhatsApp and most apps keep working on your device afterwards, since they verify the number once.

If the code does not arrive, the activation cancels and the full price returns to your balance. Prices for Kenyan numbers by service are on the pricing page.
