Every active South African SIM has to be registered under RICA, which means showing an ID document and proof of address at the counter. That is a real obstacle for anyone outside the country who needs a local number for one sign-up. A rented South African mobile number receives the SMS code for that single check, without a SIM or paperwork of your own.

South African mobile numbers belong to Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and Telkom, plus the brands that run on them. The numbers rented here come from real ranges on those networks, and South African services see an ordinary local mobile.

How a +27 number is written

At home a South African mobile is ten digits starting 06, 07 or 08, such as 082 123 4567. From abroad the 0 is dropped, giving +27 82 123 4567. Johannesburg landlines start 011 and Cape Town landlines 021, and those will not receive a verification text.

Forms with a +27 picker want the nine digits after the 0. Entering the 0 as well is the usual reason a South African form rejects a valid number.

Why people want a South African number

Local accounts on Facebook and Google are frequent reasons, especially for businesses and marketers running pages aimed at South African audiences. WhatsApp on a +27 number lets a company answer South African customers from a local line. Delivery and ride apps that serve only South Africa ask for a local number too.

Making the account independent of the number

The rented number returns to the pool once the activation window ends. Before then, add a recovery email and turn on two-step verification, such as a WhatsApp PIN or an authenticator app for Google.
