Romanian mobile numbers start with 07 at home and +40 7 from abroad, followed by eight more digits. Romanian marketplaces, shops and messaging accounts confirm new users by SMS to that shape. A rented Romanian number takes the code for one sign-up without a Romanian SIM.

Orange, Vodafone and Digi carry most Romanian mobile numbers. A number from any of those ranges comes back as Romanian mobile when a service looks it up.

Writing a Romanian number

At home a mobile number is ten digits, such as 0721 234 567. From abroad the 0 goes, giving +40 721 234 567. A form with a +40 picker wants the nine digits after the 0, and typing both +40 and the 0 is the usual reason a valid number gets rejected.

Landlines start with 02 or 03, with 021 used in Bucharest. Those numbers rarely receive SMS, so a code sent to one never arrives. Numbers beginning 0800 are toll-free lines and 090 numbers are premium services, and neither can receive a verification code.

Marketplaces and messaging

OLX is the main classifieds site in Romania and puts a phone number on every seller account. Emag, the largest Romanian online store, asks for a number for customer and marketplace seller accounts.

Businesses serving Romanian customers keep WhatsApp on a local number, since customers expect to message a +40 contact. Romanians living abroad rent a Romanian number to open an account on a local service that accepts only +40. Developers testing a Romanian-language sign-up or checkout use a +40 number to see the exact SMS text a local customer gets, since many services pick the message language from the number's country.

Account recovery after the window

The number is yours only for the activation window. Add an email to the account and turn on app-based two-factor where it exists, so a password reset never goes to a number you no longer hold.

Banks and payment apps in Romania check identity on their own, and a rented number is not for those. If a marketplace code does not arrive, the activation refunds, and current prices are on the pricing page.
